Together we are powerful!

For many of us life has been consistently feeling a lot more stressful and precarious lately.  Everything costs more, support from the government is not keeping up, and the organizations that are here to help are constantly losing funding and volunteers. On and off campus, in Guelph and everywhere else, people are struggling to keep their housing and have enough to eat – all in the context of rising tuition fees, climate change, a deterioration in mental health, and a collapsing health care system.  We are more anxious, have fewer options, and are feeling less able to put up a fight.

All levels of government are failing us, and need to be held to account.  But while we’re holding their feet to the fire we can also be helping ourselves and each other to access what we need.  There have always been people struggling for decent housing and good food, and there are many different ways to go about it. So let’s come together to share what we know, what we have, what we want, and what we can do.

On campuses and in the community people are researching how we can do things better, forming collectives, listening to each other, fighting for better living conditions, creating mutual aid networks, forming tenants’ unions, and so much more.  Focusing specifically on the housing crisis and food insecurity, this year’s Rebel Knowledge Symposium will be OPIRG’s contribution to this work.
